Qualification comparison

IB vs AP: what college credit does each route earn?

The IB Diploma and AP are not interchangeable point systems. At MIT for Fall 2026, even high Biology and Chemistry results earn no exam credit, while particular Mathematics and Physics results can. This single-institution comparison shows why you must check subject-level credit before choosing a qualification.

IB or AP: what does MIT actually award credit for?

A same-university comparison prevents made-up “IB points equal AP exams” conversions. This only applies to MIT's Fall 2026 entering class and exam credit, not admission preference.

Both are listed for possible MIT 18.01 credit; verify the exact IB Maths syllabus and MIT conditions.

Same university, different AP and IB credit thresholds

MIT's policy for the Fall 2026 entering class is a concrete comparison. Credit decisions differ by exam and the receiving institution; these are not equivalences for admission.

The differences that affect a real choice

Decision areaIB DiplomaAP
QualificationA full six-subject programme with TOK, EE and CAS core components.Individual college-level courses and examinations; not itself a single AP Diploma equivalent.
Course choiceSix subject groups, with HL/SL decisions and a required core.Schools and students select from available AP courses; the mix can vary.
Assessment outcomeEach DP subject is graded 1–7, with a diploma total up to 45.Each AP examination has a 1–5 score; colleges evaluate credit/placement by subject.
University creditInstitution-specific policies, sometimes differing by subject and SL/HL.College-specific credit/placement thresholds, which vary by institution.
Work outside examsProgramme includes internal assessment and an extended essay, alongside exams.Depends on the individual AP subject: exams may include written/free response, tasks or portfolios.

Choose around the pathway

List the universities and degrees you might apply to. Check which subjects, grades, predicted results, credit and advanced-standing policies actually matter. Do not use a generic 'IB equals X AP exams' conversion.

Check what your school offers

Ask whether the full DP, selected DP courses, AP offerings, or combinations are available. Where both programmes exist, timetable feasibility and degree prerequisites often decide more than online prestige debates.

Questions that change the next step

Is the IB Diploma equivalent to six AP classes?

There is no universal one-to-one conversion. The full Diploma combines six subjects with a required TOK, Extended Essay and CAS core. AP is a set of individual college-level courses and examinations.

Which gives more college credit, IB or AP?

University credit is institution- and subject-specific. A college may award credit for certain AP results or IB HL/SL results and not others; use its official credit-policy chart rather than a global score equivalence.

Can a student take AP courses without completing the IB Diploma?

AP courses and exams can be taken individually where schools offer them. Some schools offer more than one pathway; confirm your school's availability and the intended university's requirements.
