Check eligibility for your specific course
- 1. Select the correct intake. The university, degree, year and applicant category determine which published conditions apply.
- 2. Separate total points from subject conditions. Record the overall DP threshold, the three HL grades and the specific subject and level required. A strong overall total cannot substitute for a missing compulsory HL subject.
- 3. Check selection requirements. Confirm tests, deadlines, language evidence and contextual-offer eligibility independently. Being eligible to apply is not an admission decision.
- 4. Save the official course link. Recheck the university's own page before applying; recognition databases, general comparison tables and this guide do not override a degree-specific offer.
Example: UCL Economics for 2026 lists 39 total points, 19 across three HL subjects and grade 7 in HL Mathematics. A student with 40 points but Mathematics at SL does not meet that stated HL requirement. Verify UCL's 2027 offer ↗
Three actual university course requirements
Examples of why a general IB point total is insufficient. These are published standard requirements for the cited programme/intake, **not acceptance predictions**; check date and applicant-specific terms on the university's live page.
Oxford — Medicine
39 incl. core
HL 7,6,6; Chemistry HL plus at least one of Biology, Physics, Mathematics HL
Interview, UCAT and other admissions conditions also apply.
UCL — Economics BSc (2026 entry)
39
19 points across 3 HL subjects, with 7 in HL Mathematics; either AA or AI HL accepted
No HL subject below 5; intake stated as 2026.
Cambridge — Engineering (2027 entry)
41–42
776 at HL; Mathematics and Physics HL; Mathematics AA requested

Translate a UCL A-level offer into an IB offer
This uses UCL's actual standard Diploma equivalence chart, not a universal UK or UCAS conversion. Subject prerequisites remain separate, and actual course offers can be higher or different. Pick one to see both requirements.
39overall DP points
At least 19 points across three HL subjects, and 5 or above in each HL course.
A named Mathematics requirement accepts Maths AA HL or AI HL. The required grade is mapped separately from the A-level subject grade.

Four phrases that are easy to confuse
Recognition
The institution accepts IB credentials as a possible entrance qualification.
Not: An offer or a minimum course-specific score.
Total-score threshold
Published minimum aggregate Diploma score for that exact degree and intake.
Not: Proof that an individual subject meets a prerequisite.
Subject prerequisite
Named courses, sometimes a required HL or a minimum HL grade.
Not: Interchangeability of Math AA/AI or SL/HL without checking.
Advanced standing
Credit or course placement granted under a separate institutional policy.
Not: Automatic admission or a reduction in all degree requirements.
Make a course-specific requirements record
Recognition is not an offer. Enter the university's own criteria for one course, not a universal IB threshold. Your entries remain in this tab only.
Next to verify: University and course.
Where to get an authoritative answer
Start with the IB Recognition Statements Database to discover recognition policies, then verify the exact university's latest degree-specific admissions page. The IB notes that university policies can change and that the database may not cover every institution. For application deadlines, document requirements, scholarships and offers, the receiving institution is the final source.
Open official recognition database ↗Questions that change the next step
Does a 24-point IB Diploma qualify for every university?
No. Twenty-four is the ordinary minimum numerical total associated with Diploma award, not a worldwide university-entry requirement. Universities and individual degrees set their own conditions.
How do I check if my Mathematics course is accepted?
Open the current admissions page for the exact institution and degree. Look for AA versus AI, SL versus HL, and required grades. If the wording is unclear, ask the admissions office in writing.
If a university recognises IB, is admission guaranteed?
No. Recognition means the qualification may be considered. Admission can require higher grades, specific courses, tests, language proof, application materials or limited places.
