IB score calculator, including the 4-HL rule

Unlike a simple six-grade sum, this worksheet checks the different HL/SL point thresholds for three or four HL subjects. The official TOK/EE matrix is applied automatically. Grades entered here are hypothetical; this is not an official award decision.

32 / 45

Six subjects 30 + TOK/EE 2.

1 modeled award condition(s) not met.

Which condition needs attention?

✓ TOK and EE above grade E

Core contributes 2 points.

✓ At least 24 total points

Current total: 32.

✓ At least 12 points at HL

Three HL grades total 15.

✓ At least 9 points across three SL courses

SL grade total: 15.

✓ No subject grade of 1

A grade 1 in any of the six subjects fails this condition.

✓ No more than two subject grades of 2

Number of 2s: 0.

✓ No more than three grades of 3 or below

Grades 1–3: 0.

× CAS complete

CAS adds no points, but school-confirmed completion is required.

Worked test: enter HL grades 4, 4, 4 and SL grades 6, 6, 6 (3 HL case) with TOK B and EE B. You will exceed 24 points and meet both minimums. Switch to four HL to see the IB count only your top three HL results toward the 12-point HL rule and require five points from two SL courses.

Three things the arithmetic does not decide

Numerical total below 24

A total below the minimum cannot earn the full Diploma under normal award conditions.

Next: Review how subject grades and core points were entered.

Numerical total reaches 24

The number alone is insufficient: other subject/core conditions and CAS still apply.

Next: Ask your coordinator to check eligibility conditions.

Predicted versus awarded

A teacher's predicted grade is not an official subject result.

Next: Use this as scenario arithmetic, not a guarantee.

Questions that change the next step

Is 24 out of 45 enough to pass the IB Diploma?

Not by itself. A minimum numerical total of 24 is one condition, but the IB also specifies requirements involving subject grades, HL/SL point totals, TOK and EE, and CAS completion.

How many extra points do TOK and the Extended Essay give?

The combination can contribute up to three core points to the overall Diploma total. The award depends on the published TOK/EE grade matrix, not an independent choice of three points.

Does a predicted 38 guarantee a final 38?

No. Predicted grades are school estimates rather than awarded examination results. Use the calculator for numerical scenarios only; it cannot predict moderation, exam results or diploma award.
