Which IB Maths level satisfies the degree?

The same Maths course can be accepted for one degree and not another. These are examples from real institution-wide policies, not a prediction of acceptance.

A level decision that changes university eligibility

Suppose a student has not chosen between Maths AA and AI or SL and HL. These real degree requirements produce different answers—not a generic recommendation that everyone take Maths HL.

    Policy: Both AA HL and AI HL are accepted, but the offer requires grade 7 at HL.

Four questions to answer before changing a level

01Is the course needed for my intended degree?

Verify: Check each university's required subject, level and minimum grade.

Decision: A course preferred at HL for a degree can outweigh general advice about taking an easier option.

02Can I sustain the level across the entire programme?

Verify: Compare real timetable, reading/lab demands and past performance.

Decision: HL means increased depth and teaching time, not simply an extra letter on a transcript.

03Does the school offer this combination?

Verify: Subject group availability, teacher timetable, and exam-session registration.

Decision: A theoretical combination that clashes in your school is not a viable plan.

04What if I change my degree idea?

Verify: Check whether the prospective pathway requires Mathematics or a specific science at HL.

Decision: Preserve prerequisite flexibility where feasible, without taking four HLs only for prestige.

The 90-hour difference is a recommended teaching-time difference per subject; it is not a prediction that you will spend exactly 90 additional hours studying at home. Compare current subject guides and your school's offered levels.

Does Higher Level automatically mean a higher final grade?

No. HL has broader/deeper prescribed content and 240 recommended teaching hours versus 150 at SL. Both levels receive grades on the 1–7 scale, but expectations and assessments differ by subject.

Should I choose a fourth HL to impress universities?

A fourth HL is allowed within the Diploma structure, but it is not a universal admissions advantage. Check whether a target degree requires a particular HL combination, then consider timetable feasibility and workload.

Can I take Mathematics AA SL for a degree that lists Mathematics HL?

Do not assume that you can. Admissions policies may distinguish AA from AI and SL from HL; check the university's current course-specific prerequisite wording before selecting or changing levels.
